Speaker Profiles

Shannon P. Márquez, PhD, MEng

Dr. Márquez includes in her background a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Prairie View A&M University and a master's in civil engineering from Texas A&M. She received her PhD in environmental sciences and engineering from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Public Health. Since joining the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health at The University of Iowa as an assistant professor in the fall of 1999 she has become the director of community outreach and education for the Environmental Health Sciences Research Center (EHSRC). Dr. Márquez has also been named Assistant Dean for Diversity for the College of Public Health. In this role, Dr. Márquez will lead the College in developing new programs to attract and retain a more diverse student body and faculty. She will chair a new standing collegiate committee on diversity and become the College's representative to the University's diversity committee.
