Stephen M. Shortell, Ph.D., M.P.H., M.B.A.

Stephen M. Shortell, Ph.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., received the 2009 Hansen Award. He is the Blue Cross of California Distinguished Professor of Health Policy and Management and Dean, School of Public Health, UC-Berkeley. Dean Shortell also holds appointments in the Department of Sociology at UC-Berkeley and at the Institute for Health Policy Research, UC-San Francisco.

Stephen M. Shortell, Ph.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., received the 2009 Richard and Barbara Hansen Leadership Award and Distinguished Lectureship.

Dean Shortell visited The University of Iowa on Sept. 17-18 to present the Hansen Distinguished Lecture as part of the Patient-Centered Medical Home Symposium, a collaborative effort of the College of Public Health’s Hansen Award Lecture and the UI Public Policy Center’s Forkenbrock Series.

Biographical Information

Stephen Shortell is the Blue Cross of California Distinguished Professor of Health Policy and Management and Dean, School of Public Health, UC-Berkeley. Dean Shortell also holds appointments in the Department of Sociology at UC-Berkeley and at the Institute for Health Policy Research, UC-San Francisco.

Dean Shortell received an undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame, a master’s degree in public health from UCLA, a master’s degree in business administration and a Ph.D. in the behavioral sciences from the University of Chicago. A leading health care scholar, he has done extensive research identifying the organizational and managerial correlates of quality of care and of high performing health care organizations.

He has been the recipient of many awards, including the distinguished Baxter-Allegiance Prize for his contributions to health services research; the Distinguished Investigator Award from Academy Health; the Gold Medal Award from the American College of HealthCare Executives; and the Honorary Lifetime Membership Award from the American Hospital Association.  Dean Shortell received a commendation by the California State Senate for his contribution to health through leadership of the technical committee on “Pay for Performance.”

Dean Shortell is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and past editor of “Health Services Research.”  He serves on many boards and advisory groups.

He is currently conducting research on the evaluation of quality improvement initiatives and on the implementation of evidence-based medicine practices in physician organizations.
