Is Public Health at UI Right for You?

As we’re heading closer to the May 1 deadline to accept admission, you might be wondering, “Is Public Health at UI right for me?”

We know it’s a tough decision to make and we’re here to help! E Mail us at CPH-Undergrad@uiowa.edu  if you have questions about studying public health or about the College of Public Health in general!

Public Health students are people who are interested in health and social justice. They are interested in how they can make a difference in the health of many people all at once. They are big-thinkers with the ability to see where our systems are working and where they are broken and how they can have an impact on our world. Does this sound like you? Public health is about making a difference, be part of it!

Are you joining us Fall 2018?

If you will be a new first year public health major in Fall 2018, you are eligible to join our Public Health Living Learning Community, which will be in Catlett Hall!

We look forward to seeing you there!

Why Iowa? Access to world-renowned public health experts

Why do I love being a part of the University of Iowa College of Public Health? One of the reasons is regular access to public health experts. In October, the UI College of Public Health welcomed Dr. Camara Jones – our college’s 2017 Richard and Barbara Hansen Leadership Award Recipient. Dr. Jones’s inspiring lecture titled, “Achieving Health Equity: Tools for a National Campaign Against Racism,” can be viewed online here. Dr. Jones seeks to bring critical attention to the social determinants of health (including poverty) and the social determinants of equity (including racism).

The College of Public Health is part of the University of Iowa, just like the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering, the College of Business, or the College of Education. Yes! Talk to your advisor about declaring pre-med with your public health major.

Can I still take classes in the College of Liberal Arts and Scieces?

Yes! You can still take any class you want in CLAS, as long as you satisfy the requiremtns for that course. Being in the College of Public Health doesn’t stop you from taking courses in other colleges.

Do I have General Education Requirements in the College of Public Health?

Yes! You will have to take general education courses just like you do in other colleges. Please go here for a list of the general education requirements for the College of Public Health.

I am Public Health Interest. What does that mean?

It means you are a student of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and you will come into the College of Public Health later through our Standard Admissions Process. Email us with questions on this!
