Erik Snider

A Conversation with Erik Snider

January 24, 2024

Erik Snider is a two-time Iowa graduate who has been fortunate to experience a unique and rich career, taking him from being an administrator in the (then) Iowa Women’s Athletic Department to serving as an officer in the Israeli army, to being a marketing executive for some of the most successful and interesting global businesses around.

He is currently the director of global public relations at Stratasys, the largest 3D printing company in the market. Snider has been in similar roles for over 15 years, where he’s responsible for the development and execution of a company’s external communications and messaging strategy. He has led international teams responsible for media and analyst relations, and social media outreach across every region, balancing corporate marketing objectives with business goals in each local market.

After moving to Israel and before entering hi tech, Snider served as an officer in the Israel Defense Forces Spokesperson’s Unit, working with top international media, diplomats, and military leaders to advance the country’s geopolitical agenda and maintain its legitimacy.

In the early 90s, the men’s and women’s athletic departments were separate. Early in his career, he was a student intern and graduate assistant in the Men's Sports Information Department before and then served as the Assistant Sports Information Director in the (then) Iowa Women’s Athletic Department. It was the fulfillment of a dream to work with the Hawkeyes, and the staff and coaches had a profound impact on his development as a person and as a professional.

Snider’s Iowa roots run deep with family from Webster County, Iowa, where he used to spend summers working on the family farm and spending time at Twin Lakes. His mother, aunt, two uncles, and many beloved cousins also attended the University of Iowa.

Snider lives with his wife, Keren, and three children (Matan, Rotem and Aviv) just outside of Tel Aviv.

Karen Bjøro

A Conversation with Dr. Karen Bjøro

October 30, 2023

Dr. Karen Bjøro is currently 2nd vice president of the International Council of Nurses (2021-2025) and previously an ICN board member (2017-2021). She has participated at the World Health Assembly and the WHO European Regional Committee on numerous occasions representing ICN—the global voice of nursing.  Bjøro served as vice president of the Norwegian Nurses Organization (NNO) from 2011- 2019. During this time, she was strongly involved in an ongoing collaboration and exchange between the NNO and the nurse’s organizations in Rwanda, Malawi, Uganda, and Zambia, with the support of Norwegian Aid. The purpose of the collaboration was to develop and strengthen the nurse’s associations as a strong element of civil society. She then went on to advance this work as chair of the ICN Membership Committee, which has 135 national nurse’s associations in membership. A goal of ICN is to empower national nurse’s organizations to enable them to engage in nursing and health policy at regional and national levels. As the global voice of nursing, ICN leads the profession globally to improve health for all and leadership is a key enabler of the nursing profession.  Bjøro is currently a faculty member of the ICN Global Nursing Leadership Institute™ offered to top level nurse leaders in government, professional associations, academia, and clinical settings. Bjøro serves on the ICN Leadership and Organizational Development Committee. Involvement in nursing and health policy should begin already as a student.

Bjøro is a strong supporter of nursing student engagement in global nursing and health, and she chairs the ICN Student Engagement Committee. She has also mentored the European Student Nurses Association Board for several years. Nursing students have become a part of ICN’s delegation to the World Health Assembly and this is a valuable learning experience that can spark students’ interest in global health policy. Bjøro grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and in 1974, she received a bachelor’s degree in Scandinavian studies at the University of Minnesota. She married a Norwegian the same year and emigrated to Norway where she went on to study nursing, graduating with a diploma in nursing in 1982. Bjøro earned her PhD in gerontological nursing from the University of Iowa in 2008.
