The College of Public Health has developed a strategic plan to advance DEI that supports and expands the University’s efforts in this regard. Candidates for the post-doctoral position should have recently completed a doctoral training program (PhD, DrPH, ScD, or equivalent) in behavioral, social, or public health sciences. We seek candidates with research interest in one of the four strategic areas of the department. These are:

  1. Social justice and health equity: https://www.public-health.uiowa.edu/strategic-area-social-justice-and-health-equity/
  2. Theory-based, culturally informed interventions: https://www.public-health.uiowa.edu/strategic-area-culturally-informed-intervention/
  3. Community engagement and participation: https://www.public-health.uiowa.edu/strategic-area-community-engagement/
  4. Rural health: https://www.public-health.uiowa.edu/strategic-area-rural-health/

Our departmental faculty apply one or more of these strategic areas in a variety of cutting edge research on health or behavioral outcomes, in various population groups. Specific projects are described in the links above. The post-doctoral candidate will work with specific faculty members whose research areas coincide most with the candidate’s interests.

Postdoctoral fellows will be members of the University of Iowa’s Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (https://provost.uiowa.edu/postdoctoral-fellowship-program), designed to provide research opportunities, faculty mentoring, and career development for promising postdoctoral scholars who will contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education and at the University of Iowa. Selected fellows will have opportunities for leadership development and teaching training and will participate in tailored workshops to support their ability to pursue grants, create productive mentor relationships, and publish or present their work. Postdoctoral fellows will participate in a robust mentorship program and will have a team of mentors to provide guidance on research, teaching, scholarship, and a wide variety of other topics.

Each fellowship awarded will be for one year with the option to renew for a second year based on productivity. Additional funding may be available to support professional development for postdoctoral fellows. The fellowship may also transition into a tenure-track faculty appointment dependent upon performance and funding availability.

Eligibility: Applicants must have conferred their doctoral degree by the start date of their fellowship. Applicants with more than 24 months of relevant postdoctoral experience at the time of the award are not eligible.
