When is a call to adult protective services an insufficient response to elder abuse? From a societal perspective, strategies to address elder abuse and self-neglect require efforts focused on both prevention and response. Adult protective services have specific responsibilities that differ slightly by state. Regardless of the role and adequacy of APS, communities and individuals need tools for identifying and responding to the risk factors for abuse and neglect. How might we consider risk for abuse a failed outcome of healthy aging and what options do we have to do more than call APS?

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of this seminar, the learner will be able to:
1. Consider the purpose, function and limitations of adult protective services in fighting elder abuse.
2. Explore opportunities for identifying risk factors for abuse with the goal of bringing greater number of individuals and professionals into the prevention role.
