Research Week Keynote Presentation

Dr. Jonathan Fielding, former Director Los Angeles Co. Dept. of Public Health

The College of Public Health will host an interactive climate change seminar featuring Dr. Jonathan Fielding from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., April 7, in Callaghan Auditorium (N110 CPHB.) Dr. Fielding served as Director of Public Health and Health Officer for Los Angeles County for over 16 years where he was responsible for the full range of public health activities for over ten million county residents.

As a founding Co-Director of the UCLA Center for Health Enhancement, Education and Research, he helped develop the first comprehensive university-based center to focus on clinical and worksite prevention opportunities. He formerly served as the Founding Board Member, Chairman of the Board and member of the Executive Committee of The California Wellness Foundation, the largest U.S. Foundation devoted to disease prevention and health promotion. He was also a founding member of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and is Chair, U.S. Community Preventive Services Task Force. He is past President of the American College of Preventive Medicine, Chairman of the Federal Expert Advisory Panel in National Health Objectives for 2020, a member of the National Commission on Prevention Priorities, and was appointed as a member of the Expert Advisory Committee to the California State Department of Public Health.

Dr. Fielding is currently a Professor of Health Policy and Management at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. His areas of expertise include the development of preventive services guidelines and priorities, prevention economics and financing, evidence based public health methods and practice, and health promotion for children, adults and families in community, clinical and occupational settings. He is the author of over 175 original scientific articles and chapters, Editor of Annual Review of Public Health, and Associate Editor of the textbook, Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
