Breakthrough Leadership Moments

Five CEOs Share Their Personal Revelations

By Topic: Leadership

Healthcare leadership is a calling for many, an opportunity to pursue a rewarding career that is also in service to the patients, communities and those who provide care across the continuum. For many of these leaders, there is a defining moment that feels like an epiphany or affirmation of their chosen path. This moment can help drive them forward, even when faced with uncertainty, and can continue to provide guidance and inspiration throughout their career journey.

For this feature, Healthcare Executive interviewed five CEOs from across the country who oversee organizations of varying scopes and sizes. These executives shared the breakthrough leadership moments that stand out for them and continue to compel them, even when the challenges they face seem insurmountable.

For some, these moments derive from personal experience. For Valerie L. Powell-Stafford, FACHE, caring for her father “was really eye-opening and gave me a deeper sense of empathy for the patients we care for.” She believes that extraordinary events, both negative and positive, are opportunities for personal growth. For others, like Keith A. Parrott, FACHE, it was a humbling instance of gratitude that led him to realize the importance of his work and how his leadership affects and influences those around him.
