University of Iowa Interim Provost Sue Curry has named Tanya Uden-Holman the new associate provost for undergraduate education and dean of University College. Uden-Holman is a clinical professor in the Department of Health Management and Policy and associate dean for academic affairs at the College of Public Health. She will begin her new role on June 15, 2018.

Uden-Holman succeeds Lon Moeller, who accepted the position of provost at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Uden-Holman has been a member of the UI community for more than 30 years and first came to campus in the ’80s for her undergraduate degree. She has accumulated considerable experience working with undergraduates and administering undergraduate programs. Since she began teaching at the UI in 1997, she has taught numerous first-year seminars, coordinated with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and other Iowa liberal arts colleges to establish 4+1 opportunities for undergraduates, and led the establishment of the first undergraduate degrees from the College of Public Health.

Uden-Holman was instrumental in the interprofessional education initiative on the health sciences campus and served as chair of the Interprofessional Education Steering Committee from 2012 to 2015. She has extensive experience in national academic accreditation and in leadership of distance-based training programs that reach more than 20,000 adult learners annually.

In 1999, Uden-Holman joined the UI faculty as the College of Public Health was being formed. In 2004, she became associate dean for academic affairs at the College of Public Health, and she is currently the director of the Institute for Public Health Practice and the chair of the College of Public Health Diversity and Inclusion Committee. In addition, she serves as co-PI of the Summer Health Education Professions Program, an interdisciplinary, multiyear enrichment program funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of undergraduates who are underrepresented in health professions.

“Tanya combines an impressive history of educational leadership that has its foundation in partnership and collaboration across the campus and the state,” says Curry. “She has dedicated her life to higher education, to the incalculable benefit of us all, and I am excited to welcome her into her new position.”

Curry conducted an internal search that began in March. A search committee chaired by Tom Rice received applications and facilitated interviews with key stakeholders.

In 1987, Uden-Holman earned a BA in sociology at the UI and continued on to earn an MA and PhD in sociology also at the UI.

Uden-Holman will receive an annual salary of $219,845. Her appointment must be approved by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.
