The new year comes with plenty of opportunities to work off all those holiday treats.

But when the mercury drops, working out isn't so popular.

That’s were Active Ottumwa comes in.

The research project offers free fitness programs to keep the community active each week.

Tuesday’s event was Dog and Jog at the Ottumwa Cemetery.

Each week, the community is invited to meet at the Vanness Avenue entrance of the cemetery for a brisk jog with the dogs.

Earlier this month, KTVO took you to an open house where Active Ottumwa celebrated its third year.

Looking ahead, the group has plans to add more programs.

Right now it offers Zumba, Thai Chi, water classes, walking groups and more

“We are going to have all of our events be consistent,” said Physical Activity Leader Katelyn Myers. “We’re going to have a calendar made out for several months so then you can actively remember every week, ‘Ok, oh I can’t go out to the movies, I have to go be physically active.’”

Coming up this week:

Zumba at Market on Main at 5:30 Wednesday night and water walking at Beach Ottumwa at 5:30 Friday.
