Wright takes a closer look at hospital readmission rates

For the past several years, health care reform efforts have focused on reducing preventable hospital readmissions. However, a new study co-authored by Brad Wright, CPH assistant professor of health management and policy, suggests that when the rising number of non-admitted patients held for observation is factored in, declines in readmissions disappear. What are the health effects of growing up as a military kid?

The children of U.S. service members grow up under unique circumstances, experiencing numerous moves, frequent changes in schools and friends, and long separations from deployed parents. These challenges caused sisters Cassidy Watson and Kelsey Schertz -- self-described "military brats" – to wonder about the health outcomes of military children. Now in their mid-20s, Watson and Schertz were both drawn to the field of public health. Watson (18MPH) recently graduated from the University of Iowa and Schertz is an MPH candidate at the University of Minnesota.

Study finds drug slows brain shrinkage in people with MS

A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that the drug ibudilast slows down brain shrinkage in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Clinical trial results showed that ibudilast slowed the rate of brain atrophy by 48 percent among 255 participants with progressive MS when compared with an inactive placebo. The Clinical Trials and Statistical Data Management Center (CTSDMC) based at the University of Iowa College of Public Health served as the data coordinating center for this study.

Janssen to lead collaboratory focusing on overdose prevention in Iowa

Brandi Janssen, CPH clinical assistant professor of occupational and environmental health, has been selected by the Iowa Institute of Public Health Research and Policy (IIPHRP) to establish a new collaboratory that will gather data to help prevent drug overdoses in Iowa. A collaboratory is a creative group process designed to solve complex problems and brings together collaborators from different backgrounds and disciplines to expand the scope, scale, and impact of critical public health research.
