Undergraduate Public Health Organization
Who are we?
The University of Iowa Undergraduate Public Health Organization (UPHO) aims to build a social community among public health majors and other students with an interest in public health. We participate in service activities in the local community, provide extracurricular professional development activities, and act as a liaison between undergraduate public health students and College of Public Health administrators.
Who can join?
Although many members are public health majors or receiving their public health certificate, UPHO is open to any University of Iowa undergraduate student with a passion for public health!
What do we do?
From an end of year spring formal (with a catered dinner) to ‘pot a plant’ events, UPHO hosts a wide range of fun social activities to provide students with a break from the academic setting. We strive to help students become more connected within the College of Public Health with events like professor panels and study sessions. We also help our members get to know local public health teams by taking group field trips to organizations such as the State Hygienic Lab and Johnson County Emergency Management.
Another aspect of our organization is our commitment to giving back through service events with the goal of contributing to improved health in our area. Examples of past UPHO service events have included making sexual health kits for Johnson County Public Health, outdoor clean up parties around campus for Earth Day, and crafting blankets for patients at University of Iowa Health Care in the No One Dies Alone Program and Palliative Care Unit.
