Helping Our Students in Distress: A Follow-Up to Kognito Training

Presented by Barry A. Schreier, Ph.D., H.S.P., Director of Higher Education Programming at Scanlan Center for School Mental Health & Professor of Counseling Psychology

Monday, Oct. 3
12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
C217 CPHB and Zoom

This workshop is a follow-up to Kognito training to further assist you in responding to students in distress. This workshop provides additional depth on language and practical skills to help navigate challenging interactions. The workshop provides signs of what distress looks like, how to gauge student emotionality, ideas of what to do and what not to do, and simple language to assist with having the confidence to act when students struggle. We encourage all to attend, even if you have not completed the Kognito training simulation.

Helping Our Students: University Resources Panel Discussion

Presented by Maggie Chorazy, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Epidemiology

Wednesday, Oct. 5
12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Zoom

Learn about helpful resources on campus for distressed undergraduate and graduate students. Panelists (representing multiple offices on campus) will discuss the ways in which distressed students “show up” in their spaces, how their offices can provide support, and how their offices engage with faculty and/or staff when someone has a concern for a student.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact CPH in advance at 319-384-1500.
