Victor Soupene (21CER, 21MS, 25PhD), a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health, has been selected as a recipient of the 2025 National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) New Investigator Award. The award, jointly presented by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Public Health Association (APHA), recognizes emerging researchers conducting innovative analyses of violent death data and helps fund their projects.

Soupene’s project will focus on understanding suicide risk among U.S. healthcare workers, particularly how occupational access to drugs may contribute to overdose-related deaths. His proposed study will examine the role of job strain and workplace drug access in suicide risk, with the goal of developing targeted interventions aimed at reducing suicide rates among healthcare professionals.

The NVDRS is a program run by the CDC that collects detailed data on violent deaths—such as suicides and homicides—from multiple sources. It helps researchers and public health officials understand the circumstances surrounding these deaths so they can develop better prevention strategies. All U.S. states and territories contribute to the system, making it a primary tool for tracking and addressing violence-related public health issues.
