What do you tell young researchers or students when the path ahead feels uncertain?

Most people don’t have it all figured out. People like Tina Fey, Oprah, and Ken Jeong did not start their career until their 30’s. It’s a marathon not a sprint. Be open to opportunities that present themselves. You will never known if that opportunity might lead to something that will have an impact on your life.

What is your favorite part of your week?

Weekend. Its short but I get to catch up on some of my hobbies.

If you could design a dream course, what would it cover and why?

History of Outbreaks. It will cover different outbreaks throughout history, and what was the responses to the outbreak. In the class, we would also discuss with what we know now, how would we change the response to the outbreak.

Which public health, clinical, or community experience has most shaped how you approach your work as an epidemiologist?

I believe my community experience has shaped me as an epidemiologist. It helps me contextualize my research projects in the larger picture of the world.

What is something you are thankful for right now?

I am thankful for my family and friends. They keep me grounded, and provide much needed support.

In infectious disease epidemiology, what skill or mindset do you think matters most for the next generation of public health professionals?

An important skill is getting to know your population that you are studying. I don’t mean understanding them via reading up on them or how the population is collected. I mean going to see that population such as visiting a local community center, going to the hospital and observing interactions, or volunteering. It helps you get to understand potential social and contextual interactions that you will not see when you are just doing data analysis.

A fun fact, favorite recommendation, or anything else you’d like to share?

One of my favorite podcasts for sci-fi tv and movie/geekdom is called X-ray vision.
