Boren Awards information sessions Nov. 18 and 20

International Programs will host two Boren Awards information sessions on Monday, November 18, from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in 1111-B University Capitol Centre, and on Wednesday, November 20, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in 1117 University Capitol Centre Learn about award requirements and the application process with Boren  campus advisor Karen Wachsmuth.

Last year’s UI Boren awardees include:

  • Eli Bratsch-Prince (BA candidate, political science), to study Arabic in Jordan
  • Anger Dok (BA candidate, global health studies), to study Swahili in Tanzania
  • Yanni Liang (PhD candidate, occupational and environmental health), to study Khmer in Cambodia

Boren Scholarships (undergraduate) and Fellowships (graduate) are an initiative of the National Security Education Program. They provide funding for U.S. students to study less commonly taught languages in regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Boren Scholars and Fellows are highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena, which may include positions with the State Department and many other agencies. Boren awardees commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation. For more information about Boren Scholarships and Fellowships, visit www.borenawards.org.
