CPH results from the 2014 Working at Iowa Survey now available

Published on February 5, 2015

The results from the 2014 Working at Iowa survey are in, and they continue to show high levels of job satisfaction within the College of Public Health. In fact, across all 20 survey questions, the percentage of positive responses (all “Strongly agree,” “Agree,” and “Slightly agree” responses) was higher in the College of Public Health than the university as a whole, similar to the 2012 results.

Slightly more than 83 percent (up from 76 percent in 2012) of eligible CPH faculty and staff participated in the survey, surpassing the UI participation rate of 68 percent. Thanks to all who participated! Your willingness to share your perspectives is greatly appreciated.

These data will be used in future surveys as a baseline to assess trends over time and help to create a working environment that supports and nurtures all of our faculty and staff. These results also provide opportunity for the University to celebrate and build upon the strengths identified, as well as create positive change where opportunities for improvement exist.

Highlights from the 2014 College of Public Health survey results include:

  • 95.3 percent of CPH faculty and staff said they understand how their jobs fit into the university’s overall mission. (UI: 94.5 percent)
  • 97.2 percent report that they know what’s expected of them at work (UI: 94.9 percent)
  • 95.1 percent said their unit provides a supportive environment to retain individuals from diverse backgrounds. (UI: 89.1 percent)
  • 95.6 percent said their work units have a strong focus on providing excellent service to those with whom they interact (UI: 92.5 percent)
  • 94.8 percent would recommend the UI to a friend seeking employment. (UI: 92.2 percent)
  • 94.8 percent said their supervisors treat them with respect (UI: 90.1 percent)
  • 94.4 percent reported that individuals in their work units are civil and respectful to each other (UI 86.1 percent)
  • 91.0 percent say great things about working in their unit. (UI: 84.5 percent)
  • 90.8 percent said their supervisor is open to hearing concerns (UI: 82.5 percent)

Results show more room for improvement in two areas: fair distribution of workloads and effective management of conflict within work units.

  • 82.7 percent (up from 78 percent agreement in 2012) of CPH faculty and staff said work unit conflicts are managed effectively. (UI: 74.9 percent) Results at CPH show this has been steadily improving since 2006, but the 2014 report continues to highlight it as an area for continuing improvement.
  • 77.6 percent agreed that workloads are distributed fairly. (UI: 72.8 percent)
