Get ready for RAGBRAI: Plan your commute, parking for July 27

Published on July 19, 2018

Book It to Iowa City logoAn estimated 12,000 RAGBRAI riders will be in Iowa City Friday, July 27, for an overnight stop. The University of Iowa community is asked to help safely welcome riders and visitors to our campus from across the country and around the world.

Please be cautious while commuting to and from work on Friday, July 27, as cyclists and support vehicles make their way into Iowa City and through the downtown area. Support vehicles will begin arriving as early as 5 a.m., and riders may begin arriving as early at 8 a.m., with the majority arriving between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The RAGBRAI route into Iowa City

  • South Sand Road/Gilbert Street
  • South Gilbert Street north to Market Street
  • Market Street west to Madison Street
  • Madison Street south to Iowa Avenue
  • Iowa Avenue west to Riverside Drive
  • Riverside Drive north to Park Road and the main entrance to campgrounds in City Park

The route out of Iowa City on Saturday, July 28, will be nearly identical. However, because Market Street is one-way only, riders will leave town using Jefferson Street instead.

THINGS TO NOTE:

  • Traffic around CPHB
    • Beginning on the morning of Friday, July 27, N. Riverside Drive will be open for southbound traffic only, northbound will be reserved for bike traffic.
    • A number of street closures around town will take place July 26-28. See a full listing.
  • Parking
    • Lot 42 will be open on Friday, July 27, but entry will have to be from River Street to Southbound Riverside Drive.
    • Iowa City Transit will be offering no-fare services all day. UI Parking and Transportation has also arranged for no-cost Coralville Transit for displaced permit holders. Employees whose parking lots will be closed have been notified via e-mail and are to contact the UI Parking & Transportation office if they would prefer to use Coralville Transit instead of parking on campus.
    • CAMBUS will continue to provide service throughout campus, although adjustments may be made due to event related road closures. Visit this website for details about CAMBUS routes and schedules: uiowa.edu/routes.
  • Security – Security guards will be present on the 27th to monitor parking and traffic coming into Lot 42, limiting traffic to Lot 42 permit holders, and others requiring access to CPHB for work and school.
  • Reasonable Work Accomodations – We encourage supervisors to allow employees who work in CPHB or UCC to work at another location or take vacation, if requested. If employees must report to CPHB or UCC, we ask that supervisors encourage them to consider increased traffic and to accommodate if they arrive late due to traffic.
  • Building Hours – CPHB building entrances will be locked at 6 PM on Friday, July 27. Faculty, staff, and students with ID card access can still swipe in, if needed.
  • Downtown Iowa City is putting on a large celebration and party that evening and into the night. Riders will be traveling across campus to access the campgrounds at City Park.
