Rusmir Hamzic brings global insight to his scientific journey
Published on March 2, 2026
Rusmir Hamzic is a graduate student in epidemiology with a global perspective and a drive to understand the science behind disease. He recently shared more about his academic interests, life outside the classroom, and the experiences that continue to fuel his commitment to public health.

Where is your hometown?
My hometown is Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
What is your degree/program of study?
I am pursuing a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology.
You took a non-traditional path to the University of Iowa. Tell us about your background prior to arriving on campus.
I came to the United States from Bosnia to play college basketball. I started at Marshalltown Community College, and then I transferred to Mount Mercy University (MMU) where I completed my undergraduate degree in public health with a minor in sociology. At MMU, I was captain of the men’s basketball team, worked on campus, and completed an internship at Linn County Public Health before graduating and continuing my education at the University of Iowa.
Why did you choose to study public health? What about it interests you?
I was inspired by my mother to study public health because she has always worked in health care. I grew up learning from her and hearing about different successes and needs in health care. I learned more on my own about public health when I moved to the United States, and I found it particularly interesting to compare public health globally. I am interested in the impact public health can have on people on community-based and global levels.
What are your academic and research interests?
I am still exploring specific focus areas within epidemiology, but my interests are growing towards learning more about and researching genetic and molecular epidemiology and infectious diseases.
Tell us about some of the activities you’re involved in outside of the classroom.
Outside of the classroom, I like to play basketball and go to the gym. Music is also a big part of my life, and I like to play guitar in my free time. I also enjoy spending time with friends and seeing new places. My favorite part of the year is going home to Sarajevo and spending time with my family. Seeing them helps me recharge and get ready for a new semester.
What are your career plans post-MPH?
I am planning to pursue a PhD here at the University of Iowa with a focus on molecular and genetic epidemiology.
What have you enjoyed most about your time at the College of Public Health?
I have enjoyed the people and the knowledge I have gained the most. I also have enjoyed working as a research assistant on Dr. Michael O’Rorke’s NET-pro study. My peers and professors create a helpful and supportive learning environment that I am excited to come back to every day.
