Applications open for the Summer Health Professions Education Program

Published on November 19, 2020

What is SHPEP?

The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a FREE summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions.

SHPEP’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students underrepresented in the health professions and prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health professions schools. These students include, but are not limited to, individuals who identify as African American/Black, Native American or Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino, and who are from communities of socioeconomic and educational disadvantage.

Through in-depth experiences with one of the University of Iowa health sciences colleges — Carver College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, College of Pharmacy, and College of Public Health — SHPEP scholars will learn about the variety of opportunities available in the health care field and help them decide which career they are interested in pursuing.

Due to the pandemic, the 2021 program will be held online in its entirety.
