Three PhD students receive fellowships

PhD students Biyue Dai, Natalie Del Vecchio, and Anne Welhaven have received Ballard and Seashore Dissertation Fellowships for fall 2019. The $10,000 award allows students to focus on completing their research and dissertations. Published June 19, 2019

Oleson, Brown contribute to statistical methods in speech, language, and hearing sciences

Faculty members Jacob Oleson, professor of biostatistics and director of the UI Center for Public Health Statistics, and Grant Brown, assistant professor of biostatistics, authored the lead article and were among contributors to other papers that made up a special issue of the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research devoted to advancing statistical methods in the discipline of speech, language, and hearing sciences. Published June 7, 2019

Alumna Mayra Coronado Garcia puts data skills to work

Alumna Mayra Coronado Garcia (18MPH) joined The OMNI Institute in Denver, Colorado, as a researcher in March 2019. She will focus on data analysis and management as well as report development. "My goal is to produce reports on a big scale. We create so many reports now that look at large populations, I want to make sure we can break down the data for sub-groups so it is more digestible for smaller populations," she says. Published May 15, 2019

Iowa Summer Institute in Biostatistics receives three-year grant

The Iowa Summer Institute for Research Education in Biostatistics (ISIREB) has received a $770,257 grant over three years from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. Directed by Gideon Zamba, CPH professor of biostatistics, the goal of ISIREB is to increase the number of undergraduates who enter graduate programs in biostatistics and to maintain a solid underrepresented pipeline into biostatistics graduate programs. Published March 28, 2019

CTSDMC contributes to 2019 Abstract of Distinction

A research abstract from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) has been selected by the American Academy of Neurology as a "2019 AAN Abstract of Distinction." The Abstracts of Distinction program recognizes the top scientific achievement in each abstract topic area and is awarded to only a small number of superior abstracts. The Clinical Trials Statistical and Data Management Center (CTSDMC) based in the CPH currently serves as the statistics core for the PPMI. Published March 27, 2019

UI research advances understanding of how children learn words

With $2.1 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health, a team of UI researchers is partnering with schools in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City to enroll hundreds of elementary-age children in a study that uses novel eye-tracking technology to learn how children identify and form vocabulary. Jacob Oleson, CPH professor of biostatistics, is a co-investigator on the project. (Iowa Now) Published March 13, 2019
