Although the primary role of the statistical consultant (to translate scientific questions into sound analyses and communicate results clearly) has remained constant, advances in computing, software, data storage, and information access have continually reshaped statistical practice. This talk gives a personal historical perspective on consulting from 1980 to the present, illustrating how each technological era influenced analytic strategies, workflows, and interactions with scientific collaborators.
