The Department of Epidemiology at the University of Iowa is a research-intensive academic unit with a robust student body. The department houses highly successful registries, centers, and emerging research programs; thrives on mentorship; and delivers cutting-edge curriculum.
The department holds strong strategic alliances with units across campus to advance academic programs, share funding opportunities, and coordinate research agendas that address pressing public health challenges.
With a Scholarly Research Index of 72 , the strength of the department continues to be its research productivity. From 2016-2023, the department received $217 million in research funding direct costs ($77 million as principal investigators and $140 million through collaboration), with a sizable increase in FY24 ($3 million).

We have…

16 primary faculty who collectively average $13 million in extramural funding annually as principal investigators.

An extensive and well-established research portfolio with several long-standing center programs funded through a variety of federal and non-federal sources.

A broad array of research interest areas, which includes epidemiology teaching and research in cancer, clinical health services, chronic disease, infectious disease, injury, and genetics.

A full suite of degree programs, including MPH, MS, and PhD degrees in epidemiology, an MS in clinical investigation, and graduate certificates in emerging infectious disease epidemiology, translation and clinical investigation, and maternal and child health.

Mission Statement
The Department of Epidemiology strives to improve public and personal health by conducting innovative research addressing the magnitude, determinants, prevention and management of disease and injury and its consequences; educating researchers and public health practitioners; and collaborating with clinicians, communities and public health agencies in the measurement and evaluation of health status and prevention effectiveness.
