I specialize in comparative effectiveness research and patient-centered outcomes research. I have several roles and resources that support teaching and mentoring of clinical, epidemiology, and other research trainees and junior faculty. For example, I am dual PI for the PCORI-funded PCORnet Greater Plains Collaborative Clinical Research Network and the site PI for the University of Iowa in that network. Within PCORnet, I am intimately involved with developing and validating electronic algorithms and phenotypes for exposures, covariates and outcomes using the PCORnet Common Data Model. Our site has been a high enrolling site in numerous PCORnet pragmatic trials and observational studies. In addition, in my role as an Associate Director in the UI Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS), I contribute to the data science portfolio of ICTS responsible for comparative effectiveness research, pragmatic trials and medical product safety research leadership. I also direct the UI Department of Epidemiology Health Effectiveness Research Center which consists of investigators who conduct prospective and retrospective comparative effectiveness research and a CMS-compliant server hosting a variety of claims datasets. Finally, in my role as Associate Director for the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center I oversee the Population Science programs and data cores. These activities provide a rich environment and resources for pharmacoepidemiology and comparative effectiveness research, particularly using electronic healthcare data and prospective EHR-derived registries.
