Iowa research partnership developing a rapid, low-cost test for diarrheal diseases

University of Iowa researchers are partnering with GoDx, Inc. based in Madison, Wisconsin, to develop a low-cost test for rapidly identifying gut bugs that cause diarrheal disease and whether they are resistant to certain antibiotics. Knowing quickly which bug is causing a patient’s disease can help with prompt and appropriate treatment. Published September 11, 2023

Victor Soupene (21MS, 21CER), PhD candidate in the Department of Epidemiology, recently received a 2023 Rising Star Award from the Safe States Alliance. Pentella comments on expanded wastewater testing for viruses

The State Hygienic Laboratory (SHL) is testing wastewater samples from about 25 different communities across the state of Iowa. Mike Pentella, clinical professor of epidemiology and director of the SHL, says the lab will test for influenza, RSV, and SARS in addition to COVID-19. (KCRG) Published September 7, 2023
